Journalism News Notes

Define “Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.

Telling of current events that are newsworthy through newspapers, magazines, and the internet.

List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness.

TITLE DESCRIPTION EXAMPLE
1 Timeliness- we care about things that are current.

2. Prominence- We care about famous people. (ie. Barack Obama getting a dog)

3. Proximity- We care about the news that is close to us. (ie. Weather, Traffic)


4. Significance- The bigger the event, the more people are affected by it.

5. Unusalness- We care about things that to not happen often (Serial killers)

6. Human Interest- Feel good stories.




What are the advantages of print journalism?
1. Print store go into more detail.

2. You control what you read and how much you read.

3. Easier to carry around, take with you.


What are the advantages of broadcast journalism?

1. Broadcast journalism is more current, and up-to-the-minute.

2. Live shots and audio, a more powerful effect.

3. Easier access


Why has online journalism (convergent media) become so popular?
It takes the best parts of print and broadcast journalism and combines them together.
