Hard News Story

When Curren$y dropped his new mixtape Covert Coup on April 20th, nobody was surprised, for a couple reasons. The obvious being the significance of the day he released it, and also because he is one of the hardest working rappers in the game. Counting Covert Coup, this is his 4th project in the past year. Curren$y's success has been from his internet followers that he has been gaining for the past several years. With Hip Hop blogs and news sites become more commonplace, and social networking such as Twitter blowing up. Rappers have a perfect angle for promoting their music. This also raises the competition for rappers because fans can compare and criticize without putting much thought into it. Also, this allows for more up-and-coming rappers to get their name out and start pursuing careers.

The first track off Covert Coup is a good indication of how the whole mixtape is going to sound; grimy, dark, and raw. This is because the entire mixtape was produced by The Alchemist. With features from Freddie Gibbs, Prodigy, Smoke Dza, and Fiend there are no weak tracks.
Both Derek Schatz and Jack Yakowicz commented that "it brought them back to summer" and they both agreed that it is very chill and relaxing to listen to.
Not surprisingly, Curren$y is releasing a new album entitled Muscle Car Chronicles in early May, and another in late June/early July called Pilot Talk 3.
Jack noted that “it's always a treat to listen to new Curren$y because he's always consistent.” Even if you don't like his music, you have to admire his work ethic.

Another reason for Curren$y's recent success is his slogan "Jets" which stands for "Just Enjoy This Sh*t". Whenever a hip-hop blog posts an interview or a new song from him there are at least 50 comments that say something along the lines of "Jets Fool" or "Jet Life". A strong fan base is the number one way to blow up and the internet allows him to attract new fans pretty easily. He does numerous interviews and is always in a good time and having fun. This shows people that he isn't some snobby, fruity rapper who thinks they're better than everyone else. Curren$y is easily one of the most relatable rappers out right now and nobody expects him to slow down.

If you're going to be in Minnesota during Memorial weekend then you have a great opportunity to see Curren$y perform live at the Soundset Music Festival. This event is seven hours long and has a variety of rappers (mostly underground) performing all day. Jack and Derek both are attending Soundset, and each is equally excited to see him.
Derek raved, "I've been waiting for the past several months to see him!" and Jack added, "Yeah, after watching a couple shows on YouTube I'm very excited."

Music is subjective, so not everyone will enjoy Curren$y. However, if you're looking to relax and kick back on a rainy afternoon there is nothing better than zoning out to him describing his new classic muscle car. Do yourself a favor and branch out from your usual preference of music, and download Covert Coup. You won't be disappointed.
